I like to dress up, I'm most comfortable in heels, and, ironically, I don't feel quite myself when I'm not wearing at least a little make-up, so it probably comes as no surprise that when it comes to travel, I'm reluctant to part with my luxuries or I at least like my travelling experience to be as comfortable as possible and believe it or not what I’ve found helps bring a bit of first class luxury to my trips an it's not a new foundation or lipstick. It’s technology.
Yep, you read correctly - gadgets seem to make travelling more pleasurable but as you can imagine I’m not that technologically-minded, so over the past year, I've come up with the ultimate ‘girl’s gadget list’ for the discerning traveller. All items can be easily tucked away into your Louis Vuitton luggage (well, I can wish…) and will help accommodate all of your business and leisure pursuits. Here is what you need to pack:
For your aural pleasure
Marc by Marc Jacobs' turquoise acetate headphones are guaranteed to be at the top of every cool-girl's travel wish list. Navigate your destination in style armed with a pair of these cans. Featuring a designer motif at the sides, these oversized headphones are a chic addition to any travel bag. The headphones have padding around the ear phones, and an adjustable black and silver band at top to secure them. The sexiest detail of all is that they come with a microphone at audio cable level to enable hands-free talking. Okay, so they’re not ‘noise-cancelling’ or anything else boys seem to want in a pair of headphones (if that is the type of gadgetry you’re after then you should be reading Mr D’s 2011 technology round-up) but you’ll be the envy of every fashionista in Duty Free wearing ear candy like this.
On the go
If you want to be guaranteed a WiFi hotspot wherever you travel, then why not take one with you? The ultraportable PHS300 portable hotspot from Cradlepoint allows you to do just that – you literally just plug in and play. Simply connect your laptop to the hotspot and away you go. It can be charged via USB and provides several hours of use when fully charged. Perfect for checking your Facebook and Twitter accounts, I mean, business emails on the go…
The perfect sundial
The Oregon Scientific EB612 Personal UV Monitor with Exposure Timer monitors the current UV index and temperature, and calculates your recommended sunbathing time based on UV, SPF and your personal skin type and all in the form of a wrist strap for easy use. So now all you have to worry about is which bikini to wear…
Lost in translation
The Merian Scout Navigator is a handheld unit, featuring a touchscreen, four to eight hours of battery life, NAVTEQ maps and traffic updates. Yawn, a GPS you might think, all pretty straightforward, right? Wrong, this little device is a must for any European country, as it comes with AudioGuides, so not only will you know your exact location but it recommends restaurants, museums and other cultural attractions in the area. You’ll feel like a native in no time and can really impress your travelling date with your knowledge.
Underwater music
iPods are built to a certain level of durability but they are not all that durable, as I’ve found out… They’re likely to suffer if you bash them or drop them in the lavatory. Ooooops…The Atlantic EGO iceBar2 is the ideal solution for clumsy travellers. It’s a shatterproof case that will protect your iPod not only from wear and tear, but also water. You can take it in the shower or hot tub, or even swimming… it’s waterproof to a depth of up to 3 metres. Apparently it’s even Miss H proof!
Now all that is required is a private jet to transport it all. A girl can wish right?
