The success of the iPhone and iPad proves men lust after technology and the latest must-have hot gadgets just as much as they do after women. How else to explain the obsession with style over, ahem, substance? But what's the next iPhone or iPad? The world's biggest technology and gadgets show, the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), has just ended in Las Vegas, unveiling the best new mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras and games consoles we'll all be wanting in 2011. Here are the hottest new gadgets for 2011 that I would gladly give up a date to get my hands on.
Tablets
This year is all about PC tablets. Or, more accurately, the gadgets which hope to beat the iPad. In the past I've been sceptical about the need for these but have since been won over (have a read of my original iPad review). They're great for reading magazines and newspapers online, and it's much more enjoyable surfing the Internet on one than, say, your mobile phone. The major problem? Size. It's too big. As always with tech, something new always comes along. I may well have to buy myself the best all-rounder, the Motorola Xoom. As with other tablets like the Dell Streak, it operates Google's latest quality Android software, Honeycomb (3.0). For videos and games, try the Blackberry PlayBook and for a PC/hybrid, try the Samsung TX100 which looks great and has a slide in/out keyboard. For reading books, the Amazon Kindle is great value and the extensive battery life lasts a month - it's next on my hit list!
Smart Phones
Smartphones are set to get even smarter - and smaller - in 2011. Only time will tell whether Windows Phones will take off, but in the meantime, expect Panasonic's new Viera Tablet to serve as your new visual remote control. The Motorola Atrix may well be the most powerful smartphone, while the LG Optimus Black is now the world's slimmest smartphone. Size really does matter.
3D laptops and mobile phones
I'm keeping both eyes on how 3D develops this year - there's so much cool stuff happening behind the scenes. Sony is launching a 3D-enabled laptop, the Sony Vaio F Series, not to mention its HD capabilities. They've also brought 3D to mobile phones with the new Bloggie, although you'll need 3D glasses on a 3D TV to see them, but it's a sign of things to come.
Sony NGP and Nintendo 3DS
I'd forgotten about gaming recently, but these two products may well have me back in the game. The 'Next Generation Portable' is Sony's PSP follow up, the big deal being it's now 3G enabled - so you can play with others from anywhere with a 3G phone signal. The Nintendo 3DS brings 3D gaming, without the specs.
Nike+ Sportwatch
Nike unveiled a new watch which integrates with GPS - the Nike+ Sportwatch GPS. It's powered by TomTom so you can map your run. So, on top of options like performance tracking and running history, you can now search for routes by location, length and difficulty. I'll definitely need to lay my hands on one of those! Although it may record my occasional pit-stops at Al's Diner. Hmmm.
Polaroid mobile printer
This is one I won't have to wait for - I got a tiny pocket printer for my mobile phone last Christmas and I'm ecstatic. It really is great, cheap tech. The Polaroid PoGo has no cable, no charger and you can instantly print out your favourite pictures from your mobile phone. I'll let you know how I get on!
And with that, I'm putting future technology absolutely to one side in favour of the here and now - to call some friends to go for a beer! A few calls on my iPhone ought to do it. Where to go though? Best check my iPad. Maybe I should run there. I'll bring my PSP in case they're late too...
