Driving an Alfa Romeo Giulietta

Cars. Gotta love 'em. Luxury marques or high-spec sports cars, driving a great car can be a sublime experience. So when I needed a hire car, I turned to a quality Italian marque, Alfa Romeo, and their Giulietta for some fun. Here's what happened.

Personal accessories

Our fashion, our style and the money we have. How we carry them says much more. Accessories remind us of relationships, family and great memories. That's why I want to share with you the great gifts and accessories I always carry with me. I'll also share where to buy them.

What makes a great personal item?

In my opinion, rarity, use, association and style. My idea of a great accessory is to individualise something, so rarity is important. But just because it's expensive and rare doesn't make it relevant, I need something I'm going to use. Ideally, every day. Bonus points if it reminds me of a great trip to Tokyo or a lost weekend in Paris. Of course, if it's stylish too, then it's definitely coming with me. If it's been given to me, chances are they're coming with me too. Read on and I'll explain.

Here's what I always carry with me:

  1. Wallet - From Shanghai Tang. It's a constant reminder of time spent in Hong Kong. Their usual 'made by Chinese' line is morphed on the inside to read 'spent by Chinese'. I love that touch. I also have a slim one from classic British company Mulberry so I can travel light - sometimes it's not about the size of your wallet, it's how you use it.
  2. iPad Sleeve - Perhaps my favourite item of all, from Hard Graft. A small company in Austria making designer cases, this felt and leather case is simply stunning. It keeps my iPad stylishly protected. They also do great cases for iPhones and other phones too.
  3. Bag - A casual one from Manhattan Portage takes me to the TriBeCa district every time I use it. They're hand-made in Manhattan, New York. For upscale situations, I reach for my Dunhill bag which is smart, not boring. A crucial distinction.
  4. Business Card Holder - A little old-school, but when you're giving someone your contact details, you want it to say the right things about you. I have a plain silver one from Links of London.  It's simple and stylish and says I pay attention to the detail.
  5. Key Ring - I love that there are people out there designing great stuff all the time, like SUCK. This one's a joke just for me. A beer-bottle opener disguised as a key ring reminds me not to take life too seriously. But the joke's on me trying to get in at night after this thing's been put to use on a few!
  6. Watches - I have three to call on. A leather-strapped Diesel watch for relaxed weekends, though they've since stopped making watches, a Casio G-Shock to handle adventure weekends, and a Swiss TAG Heuer Carrera to impress.

For most people, style comes from all sorts of places. Get tips from the style pages of men's magazines like GQ and Esquire, design magazines like Wallpaper* and stores like New York's MOMA and London's MagMa.

The rest will just come from the people around you and the things you do. That's the fun of individual accessories - it takes a little time, a few people and a whole lot of memories. So get out there and start having some - that's certainly what I'm doing.
