Driving an Alfa Romeo Giulietta

Cars. Gotta love 'em. Luxury marques or high-spec sports cars, driving a great car can be a sublime experience. So when I needed a hire car, I turned to a quality Italian marque, Alfa Romeo, and their Giulietta for some fun. Here's what happened.

Gadgets

The best technology and gadgets rock. From the iPad to mobile phones like the iPhone, 3D, on-demand television and digital cameras, the best gadgets blow my mind. There's so much out there, I've put together the ten best gadgets which have changed my life, and will change yours too:

  1. Mobile Phones: iPhone 4

With built-in sat-nav, music on the go, quick internet browsing and all those killer apps, it's world-class. Also look out for HTC's new Android phones and Microsoft's Windows 7 phone. But it's the iPhone's ease of use which won me over.

  2. Tablets: iPad

Tablets have filled the gap between laptops and mobile phones. With more great apps, phone calls over the internet (VOIP) through Skype and an improved browsing experience that works well for longer articles, these gadgets pack a serious punch. Look out for the Samsung Galaxy Tab and Amazon's Kindle, both cheaper alternatives but without the apps of the iPad.

  3. TV: 3D TV

2010 was 3D's year. With large-format 3D LED televisions coming out from the likes of Toshiba, Sony and Panasonic, including built in satallite receivers, Wi-Fi and HD, 3D TVs have a lot to offer besides the third dimension. Panasonic is currently leading the pack, but things are moving incredibly fast, so stay tuned.

  4. High-definition

Whether it's high-definition through satellite, cable or Blu-ray, going high-def is a must. It's great for sports and home-cinema. I'm hooked up with a Panasonic Blu-ray (Panasonic DMP-BD85) and Panasonic HDTV (the TX-L32D25).

  5. Music software: Spotify

This online music subscription service gives access to a vast (legal!) catalogue of music on-demand. I create playlists and share collections with friends.

  6. External hard-drives

Until 'the cloud' becomes reality, with providers like Microsoft and Google hosting your files for you in cyberspace, cheap-as-chips USB memory sticks and battle-ready hard-drives from the likes of La Cie can hold 1GB, 1TB or more. And the right ones look the business too- try La Cie's Golden Disk.

  7. Headphones

I'm all for being discreet, but in-earphones aren't comfortable. Opt for headphones and you'll be marked out as a pro. For a fixed spot like the lounge, I've gone for Sennheiser wireless headphones and for on the go, the Grado SR60i.

  8. Camera: Leica D-Lux 4

Leicas are cameras for the fashion-concious - they just look incredibly cool. They're the choice of photographers everywhere, and they've gone digital. My D-Lux 4 is a lot of fun.

  9. Camcorder: Flip

Small, cheap and user-friendly, my Ultra HD is always with me. Upload videos to YouTube and Facebook super-quick, wherever you are.

  10. Bladeless Fan: Dyson

Fans aren't cool. But this bladeless one absolutly is. Sure, it's expensive and a bit showy but then that's why I bought it. It makes the mundane look designer and I like that.

Mr D's Top Tips for Buying Gadgets

  1. Do your research - ask your friends, try Wired and MSN.
  2. Play with it - that way you'll know whether it's going to fit with who you are.
  3. Compare prices - try Kelkoo and Pricerunner
  4. Make sure it's legit - reputable manufacturer, reliable supplier and worldwide guarantee.
