Oh wow, I’ve just been told some VERY exciting news but I’ve been sworn to secrecy, which makes it even worse, as by being told you are sworn to absolute secrecy it makes you want to blurt it out and tell everyone even more...
Okay, okay, you’ve twisted my arm, I’ll tell you. My friend Charlie is about to propose to my other good friend (his long term girlfriend) Madeline! Amazing news isn’t it?
You’re probably wondering why Charlie has told me this first instead of his blushing bride-to-be. Well, it’s because Charlie is - how can I put this politely - useless...
The poor man couldn’t find his way out of a paper bag, and as lovely as he is, his idea of the perfect proposal would probably be a bottle of cava shared whilst watching television.
Thankfully, Charlie does have the foresight to know his limitations in such matters, so has asked me for some full-proof ideas of where to propose to get Madeline to say ‘yes’.
Here is my suggestions of the best places to propose depending on your fiancé's personality.
The Romantic
It sounds like a romantic cliché suggesting that you propose in the city of love but put a twist on the traditional Parisian proposal by booking the penthouse suite at the famous luxury George V hotel situated just off the Champs-Élysées. The central location means you can see the Eiffel Tower from the comfort of your balcony, giving you the perfect backdrop to get down on one knee. It doesn’t get any more romantic than that.
The Nature Lover
Stroll through the romantic Tiergarten, Berlin's largest park and home to the Zoological Gardens at dusk to follow your biological imperative and propose.
The View Seeker
Barcelona is a fantastic city and the best way to see it is by visiting the Torre de Collserola, a uniquely designed tower located on the Tibidabo hill in the Serra de Collserola, designed by Sir Norman Foster. The high-tech transparent lift gives you the most breath-taking views of the city, the Pyrenees and the sea - the perfect vista for the perfect proposal. Perfecta.
The Arts Lover
Head down Portcurno, Cornwall to watch an outdoor play at the Minack Ampitheatre. The open-air venue is perched on the side of a cliff with sub-tropical gardens adding a dash of colour to the venue. The breath-taking sea views will give your proposal an added wow factor - just make sure you give the performance of a lifetime.
The Thrill-Seeker
The Grand Canyon was created over six million years ago by the Colorado River, and is 277 miles long and over a mile deep. Its sheer vastness creates a humbling experience – and a moving spot to ask your partner to marry you. They can’t fail to say yes – especially when they’re teetering dangerously close to one of the many eye-wateringly high cliff edges.
The Sports Junkie
Cross-country ski to Whistler’s picturesque ‘Proposal Corner’ in Lost Lake Park, Canada. Just a short distance from The Fairmont Chateau to pop the question in one of the most romantic of settings there is. Then return to the Chateau's Mallard Lounge for a snuggle by the fire pits as you gaze into each other's eyes.
The Princess
Every girl has dreams of being a princess and what better way to make her feel like one than proposing to her in a castle? One of the most spectacular sights in Germany, Neuschwanstein Castle, sits atop an impressive mountain range, and is surrounded by beautiful lakes and forests. Built by Ludwig II, whose marriage was the starting point of the world famous Bavarian beer-drinking tradition, Munich's Oktoberfest, it's a unique and grandiose castle, and would provide a truly original proposal location. Plus you’ll get to sample the local beer too! Bonus!
I know Madeline will say yes, even if he did propose with a bottle of cava whist watching television, as the best marriage proposals come from the heart… but at least now she’ll get a holiday now too!
